Artist: Friedrich Christian Nerly
(1807 Erfurt – 1878 Venedig)
The young Erfurt painter Friedrich Christian Nerly settled permanently in Venice at the age of 28 when he married a Venetian beauty in 1835. With his wife, the daughter of a rich Venetian marquess, he lived in an old palace. Like Canaletto and Francesco Guardi before him, Nerly specialised in Venetian city views, and he became one of the most successful veduta painters of Venice in his day.
